There are a limited number of scholarships available to the

youth of the Nation and every year the competition for

them intensifies. The number of scholarships is also not as

many as they used to be and those available are sometimes

not full scholarships. This means that your parents may still

have to find some money to assist you even if you do get

awarded a scholarship. You may view the offers at

The job of every parent is to operate on the assumption that

their child may not be awarded a scholarship. Not that you

are not bright – it’s just that there may not be enough

scholarships to go around and so alternate funding may

have to be investigated.

Binding Clauses

A scholarship is NOT FREE MONEY. The Government

is providing funding, through the provision of binding

scholarships, for the training of persons who choose to

follow a course identified on the Priority List. As the

recipient of a scholarship you are required to return to Saint

Lucia to work for the period equivalent to the length of

time you were on scholarship e.g. if the scholarship is for

three years you will be expected to work for a minimum of

three years.

The binding clause for a bank loan is different. You are

obligated to pay your loan back or the bank will seize the

collateral given to guarantee the loan.

Funding Yourself

If all else fails, then fund yourself. This option will take

every ounce of discipline and determination that you have.

This option will test your patience as it may take years for

you to be in the position to go to University. This option

means that you will have to get a job, while many of your

friends go to University.

But you are worth it. Keep your career goal as your beacon.

If you are not willing to find a way to invest in yourself,

who will?

Many Financial Intuitions have a Financial Planner, so talk

to one. Agree on a strategy, stay with your plan and never

let go of your dream.

Outside the Box

Increasingly there are non-traditional ways to obtain funding; below

are a few examples:

a. Longitude Prize 2014 - To commemorate the 300th

Anniversary of the original Longitude Prize (for the invention

of a clock that could keep time at sea), a new prize has been

launched to encourage inventors and scientists to find solutions

to six key problems facing the world1.
